SworDGrammar School: HOMOPHONES
Homophones are words that are pronounced the same way but are spelt differently and have different meaning.
These kinds of words pose a lot of challenge to writers, they sometimes use one for another. Here I will identify a number of them, as we have a lots of them.
EXAMPLES
1. Hear : To be aware of sound with your ear.
Ear: Either of the organ on the side of the head, that you hear with.
Here: An adverb used after a verb or preposition to mean, 'in, at or to this position or place'
2. Hare: An animal, large rabbit with very strong back, that can run very fast.
Air: The mixture of gases that surrounds the earth and that we breath.
Heir: A person who has the right to receive somebody's property, money, or title when ye person dies.
Hair: The substance that looks like a mass of fine thread growing especially on the head.
3. Tight: Held or fixed in a position firmly, difficult to move or undo.
Tithe: A tenth part of what someone produce or earn, that was paid as a tax or support to a church.
4. Sight: The ability to see, the act of seeing somebody or something.
Cite: To mention something as a reason, example or in other to support what you are saying.
Site: A place where a building or town, was, is or will be located
5. Lung: Either of the two organs in the chest that you used for breathing.
Long: Measuring or covering a great length or distance or a greater length or distance than usual
6. Access: A way of entering into a place.
Assess: To make a judgement about a nature or quality of somebody or something.
7. Stir: To move a liquid or substance around, using a spoon or something similar.
Steer: To control the direction in which a boat, car etc moves
8. Pale: Having skin that is almost white, having skin that is whiter than usual because of illness, a strong emotion etc
Pail: Bucket.
9. Lock: To fasten something with a lock. To be fastened with a lock.
Luck: Good thing that happen to someone by chance, not because of your own effort or ability.
10. Launch: To start an activity, especially an organization...
Lunch: Meal eaten in the middle of the day.
11. Share: To have or uses that at same time as somebody else.
Cheer: Shout of joy, support or praise.
12. Hill: An area of land that is higher than the land around but not as high as a mountain.
Heal: To become healthy.
Heel: The back part of the foot below the ankle.
13. Cease: To stop something from happening or existing.
Seize: To take somebody or something in your hand suddenly and using force.
14. Not: Use to form a negative of verb, be, do, have and modal verb.
Knot: A join made by tying together two pieces or ends of string, rope etc
Nut: A small hard fruit with a very hard shell that grows on some tree

15. Break: To separate into two or more parts, as a result of force.
Brake: A device for slowing or stopping a vehicle.
16. Seal: To close something by sticking the edges of the opening together.
Zeal: Great energy or enthusiasm connected with something that you feel strongly about.
17. See: To become aware of something by using your eyes.
Sea: The salt water that covers the most part of the earth surface and surrounds it central or island.
18. Hit: To bring your hand against somebody quickly with force.
Eat: To put food in your mouth, chew it and swallow it.
Heat: Quality of being hot.
19. Lye: Chemical used in various industrial processing including washing.
Lie: To say something that is not true.
To put yourself in a flat or horizontal position so that you are not standing or sitting
20. Half: Either of two equal part into which something is divided.
Have: To own, hold or possess something.
21. Assent: An official agreement to or approval of something.
Ascent: The act of climbing or moving up; an upward journey.
22. Saw: A tool that has a long blade with sharp point along one of it's edges.
Sore: An infected part of the body that is painful and usually red.
Soar: To rise quickly and smooth up into the air.
23. Stork: A large white and black bird that lives near water.
Stock: A supply of goods that is available for sale in a shop or store.
Stuck: Unable to more or to be moved.
Stalk: A thin stem that support a leaf, flower or fruits...
24. Storey: A level of a building, a floor
Story: A description of an event and people that the writer or has invented in order to entertainment people.
25. Stoop: To bend your body forward and downward.
Stoep: A raised area outside the door of a house with roof over it, where you can sit and
relax.
Stoup: A stone containing holy water in the church.
