WuraNaija Grammar School(WGS ): The structure of a sentence.
A sentence is a set of words expressing a statement, question or order. It has three major components; subject, verb and object. It can also have an adverb to add more information to the verb.
The subject
The subject of a sentence can be a noun, pronoun, noun phrase or noun clause. It usually come as the first part of the sentence before the verb. The subject is the performer of an action in a sentence, it also agrees with verb in number.
Examples,
1. I am the new clerk
2. Toheeb is a gentle boy
I and Toheeb are the subjects of the sentences they are used in.
The verb
Verbs are words that express action or state of being. Without a verb a sentence is meaningless because it is only with verb in a sentence that it makes complete thought. It usually comes after the subject and agrees with subject in number.
Examples,
1. She dances skillfully
2. Ade is beautiful
Dances and is are the verbs in the sentences they are used in.
The object
The object can be noun or pronoun. It usually comes after the verb and show us the receiver of the action of the verb.
Examples,
1. Ade slapped Kola
2. She held him by his hand
Kola and hand is the receiver of the action in the sentences they are used in.
Adverb
The adverb modifies a verb in a sentence. It says where, when, how, why, to what extent, under what conduction an action was performed. It can stay before or after the verb in a sentence.
Examples,
1. She passed on yesterday.
2. She dances skillfully
Yesterday and skillfully are adverbs.
Assignment
1. Write out five sentences and divide them into parts.
