NIGERIANS, IF WE MUST DIE
If We Must Die
Claude McKay
If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back.
To those who had taken their time to stand with Nigeria, you have done well.
If Nigerians must die, let our voice be held that, we hate the situation we find the nation. We are a nation so full, why live so empty. We are nation so blessed, why live as under curse.
Though they try to stop us, we will keep moving.
Though they have the men in uniform to stop us, we will not give up.
Though they send us messages, we will not keep shut.
Even if they threaten, we will not stumble, we move straight ahead.
They might have the power in stock to stop the move, we will say what we feel, the pain of hunger, the nation stagnant, the men provoked violence, the hurt of loosing loved ones and more lest our children yet to be born curse us, for keeping silent, not saying any.
Should we choose to be mute now, the burden of these greedy and clueless men will kill us.
Do they mind? No they care not, instead of accepting their wrong, they find a wrong way out.
Move peacefully and responsibly my people.
No violence, no damaging yet standing firm, making your voice heard, your feeling known, you hate this misery life, they want to put on us as a lifestyle. It goes on till the end, we must not die as if we have no lot, silenced by fear or dread of death.
Even if we must die, let our voice be heard.
Democracy is the system of government where we rule, a government by the people. This is one way we agree against you, the government turn burden. We need ease. Ease us of this avoidable load of pain.
Keep the move, keep the move, till our voice is heard and our need is met. It is simple, a life worth living, a nation living. A people happy. We deserve it.
We deserve happiness.
March on!
