LAND SNAIL: TERRESTRIAL GASTROPOD MOLLUSK

Land snails are the snails that lives on land instead of fresh or salt water. The majority of land snails are pulmonates, they have a lung and breath air. A minority have gills and an operculum, this type of snail lives in the damp or wet. Land snails have strong muscular foot, they use mucus to enable them to craw over rough surface and in order to keep their soft bodies from drying out. They have radular and primitive brain.
Majority of land snails are hernophrodite. They can produce eggs without mating other. As the snails grow, their shell grow. They consume calcium for their shell to grow. Their shell form spiral shape. Most land snails are annual, others live for 2-3 years, some live beyond ten years.
Land snails are usually herbivorous, some species are predatory carnivores of omnivores. They consume, leaves, stems, soft bark, fruit, vegetables, fungi, algae.
They have enemies who prey on them. Thrushes, hedgehog snakes, elecollate snails, ground bettles and more. To protect themselves from prays, the withdraw their soft body into their shell.

GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL
this type of snail belong to the achantinidae. They originate from east Africa. They have brown conical shapes shell. They can grow up to 12cm length and weight up to 600g. They dwell in mild forest, wetland, coastal areas, natural forest, shrubland, urban areas. As they grow their shell grows until adults stage. Their shell can be brown with dark coloured stripes or reddish to yellow coloured with vertical markings, it can be 4-7 inches long, made of 7-9 spiral.
    They have two pairs of tentacles on their heads. The eyes on the top of the first pair. Sense of smell on top of the second part. They have muscular foot well developed, they produce mucus to facilitate movement across the substrate as they move slowly.
    African snails are active in the night and sleep in the day, mostly burying themselves in the ground. They are vegetarians, they consume different type of leaves up to 500 species of plants, fruits, vegetables and flowers. They eat some types of plants that give them calcium for the development of their shell. When they do not get enough calcium  from plants, they feed on, bones, carcass, sand or small stones to get it. They can cause damage on the agriculture field by consuming the leaves. They can also transmit various diseases, because they harbour parasites.
     These type of snail hide in their shell when weather is extremely cold or hot. This reduces drastically their metabolism and survive few months or few years without food. They all live alone, they do not create bound even with their offsprings. They only move close to others when they want to mate.
     Giant African snail are Hermaphrodites but they need other for a successful mating. They hatch after 11-15 days. They can produce six clutches of eggs per year, each made around 200 per eggs, hatching 90% of them. They reach adult size by six months. Giant African snail have average life span of 5-7 but some can live over ten years the they feed well and live in good condition.
